The Reliable Cowboy edition by Susan Page Davis Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews
This story fit in well with the theme Christmas Mail-Order Angels. Finding out more about the other women who answered the ad for brides in Angel Vale, Wyoming makes for a super addition to this series. I enjoyed this story very much. Highly recommend.
Isabella has lost her husband in a tragic accident at sea. Edwin has prospects of a promotion on a Wyoming ranch, but no home to offer – just his heart. When Isabella hears the call for mail-order brides, she answers with a “yes,” but wonders if she will ever love again. After all, she had married her sweetheart only to lose him. Can she risk her heart again for someone she’s never met? For someone who lives in the wilds of Wyoming Territory? It’s not even a state! Edwin wants a family of his own, someone to keep him company in the lonely territory. Will Isabella be the one, or will she soon tire of waiting and move on? Susan Page Davis writes eloquently of the West, and of the pioneers that tamed that land. From the storm-tossed seashore of Maine to the vastness of the rolling prairie, she paints a picture that puts you there, experiencing what her characters experience, feeling what they feel. As with all of Susan’s writing, this is highly recommended, and is a wonderful addition to the “Christmas Mail-Order Angels” collection.

Isabella Johnston lost her husband to the sea, and she wants to get as far from the coast as she can. She leaves Maine to marry a cowboy in Wyoming Territory, reasoning that it will be safe on the ranch with Edwin. She is soon to learn there are hardships and danger even in the vast open spaces of the Wyoming Territory. Edwin wants a family, but he doesn't have a place of his own since he is a ranch hand and living in the bunk-house. Hopefully, the ranch foreman job will be offered to him, which also includes a small cabin.
Vast, open spaces of the Wyoming Territory are described in such a way I could envision it as I read this heartwarming story. Beauty and danger both are all apart of this wondrous land, which the characters soon learn the hard way. I enjoyed the story very much. This is the third novella in the Christmas Mail-Order Angel Novellas collection.
In the 1960s, I loved a television show called "Here Come the Brides," although I rarely got to see an entire episode because we were at church on Wednesday nights and the show began at the same time we dismissed. This book reminded me of that show -- men living in the remote West, longing for a wife and a home, and women in the East who needed a companion and financial provider. Recently widowed Isabella Johnston is one of those women, and ranch hand Edwin Gray is one of those men. After she exchanges letters with Edwin for several months, she makes the long train journey from Maine to Wyoming in the hopes of marrying Edwin and making a fresh start. She believes, from his letters, that Edwin is a decent, hard-working man, and she has no idea if he will want to marry her right away or if she will stay in a lodging house with some of the other brides until he makes his decision. Edwin's dilemma is financial. He is anticipating a promotion to ranch foreman, but until that happens, he has no home to offer Isabella. As Isabella learns about the hardships and realities of ranch living, including the dangers of grizzly bears, she also learns about the man for whom she has left the only home she has ever known. Any reader of romance knows that the couple eventually ends up together, but the questions for this story are how and when? What obstacles will they have to overcome, including Isabella's expectations of her future groom and her lingering grief over the loss of her husband? As a lover of historical westerns, I enjoyed this novella very much and recommend it for others who enjoy the genre. My only wish is that it were a full-length novel instead of a novella as I wanted to read more about Isabella's and Edwin's story! This book was gifted to me by the author.
